Feminist Pedagogy (Feminst Knowledges)

Feminist pedagogy is the feminist school of thought that acknowledges that knowledge is socially constructed. It is how we teach and learn about equal opportunity and analyze other forms of inequality. Feminist Pedagogy uses teaching practices that work towards feminist goals in the classroom. Some methods include; making classrooms an open and free place for all where disagreements are disputed with empathy and understanding, teaching with an emphasis on freedom and justice, and a focus on intersectional inquiry and research. They are theories and practices of learning, accounting for both teaching methods and learning styles influenced by education studies, psychology, and ideology/ politics, which connects to our reading from hooks. She produces work that is easy to read and accessible to all types of peoples. hooks define feminism as a term so broad that it fits with no one and can accommodate any political view. "Simply put, feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexists exploitation, and oppression" (Chapter 1, 18); she goes on to explain how exploration hurts everyone and explains the importance of gender justice. Gender Justice is more than just saying sexism impacts women. She acknowledges how there is an unequal injustice to both genders. However, there can be as many various definitions of women that there are women. In class, we also looked at Victoria L. Bronley's writing. She went over the reluctance to link feminism to social justice causes that feminism advocated for and are generally popular. Due to the negative stereotypes surrounding feminism, people assume feminism is not needed anymore- socially forgetting how we got to that point and that it used not always to be that way. "Unfortunately, many of the hard-fought struggles and important gains have become conventional common sense" (Chapter 2, 21). A large part of feminist pedagogy is teaching about racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny etc. to help others understand the power/social structures we live with today. To make changes to these structures, others must understand and are educated about them. These social constructs impact all of our lives daily. An essential part of making a significant change is realizing what is wrong with the world around us; then, we can develop plans and visions for a better future.
There is a specific set of theories when it comes to feminist pedagogies(not limited to). One example could be an emphasis on freedom from dominant ideologies and social justice. Another teaching practice is making classrooms open and free to all curiosity with no personal or political attacks. It could also stem from another point about feminist pedagogies is it takes personal experiences and realities as serious sources of knowledge. An example of this would be that they take points from what we do and link them to bigger goals and feminist pedagogies and inquiry concepts. Many feminist ideologies begin with our beliefs and motivations to start their practices in the classroom. As it starts with beliefs and incentives, it is more of a way of thinking than a rule on how to teach and educate. Because everyone has different motivations and methods of thinking, there are many different ways it is used across diverse learning environments.
There are three fundamental tenets to feminist pedagogy, Resisting Hierarchy, Using experience as a resource, and lastly, Transformative learning. Resisting Hierarchy in the schools is when the students work against the teachers' creations of the Hierarchy, and in doing so, the students bring forward new 'content' and influence the design of the classroom. Using experience as a resource, using your knowledge from a theoretical point, and the non-academic point is a worldly viewpoint. Using your experiences, you will make educated arguments to your point of view. Transformative learning is rather than changing to a new understanding, to direct the former learning in a new direction, causing realizations and interpretation experiences and social phenomenon. These three fundamental tenets to feminist pedagogy cause us to re-evaluate and criticize the feminist movement.
Feminism is "a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression." (hooks 17) Pedagogy is "theories and practices of learning, accounting for both teaching methods and learning styles." Morrison, Dr. Josh. "feminism Pedagogies" WGST-112. 10 September 2020, University of Saskatchewan. Lecture. When compounding these two terms, feminism Pedagogies is a "Specific set of theories and teaching practices which direct teaching towards feminist goals." Morrison, Dr. Josh. "feminism Pedagogies" WGST-112. 10 September 2020, University of Saskatchewan. Lecture. Feminism pedagogy is the first step that allows people to have in-depth knowledge about feminism. Why are feminist movements essential? It will enable us to understand the difficulties that feminism face, such as (racism, patriarchy, homophobia, etc.) and what aspects of feminism Pedagogies we have to improve in future. Hence, when we understand the term feminism Pedagogies better, "feminism is for everybody" ( hooks 18).
